Itinerary

  • Morning Departure:
Your Egyptologist tour guide will meet you at your hotel or Nile cruise in Aswan early in the morning to commence your Abu Simbel day trip. Prepare for a scenic drive of approximately three hours to reach the awe-inspiring Abu Simbel temples.
  • Exploration of Abu Simbel:
Upon arrival, your guide will introduce you to this world-renowned site, where Pharaoh Ramses II (1290-1223 B.C.) had two grand temples carved directly from the limestone mountains.

    • Visit the Great Temple:
First, explore the colossal Great Temple, dedicated to the gods Amon-Re and Ra-Harakhte. Here, you will see the four iconic statues of Ramses II, each over 20 meters high, majestically overlooking the desert.
    • Discover the Small Temple:
Next, visit the smaller temple dedicated to the cow-headed goddess Hathor, honored in this structure built for Ramses II’s favorite wife, Queen Nefertari. This temple features six massive standing statues, each standing at 10 meters tall.
  • Architectural Wonders:
Originally carved into the mountain, both temples now sit beneath an artificial dome designed to mimic their original setting. Remarkably, the Great Temple was constructed so that the rising sun would shine directly between the four statues and illuminate the inner sanctuary during the equinoxes—February 22nd and October 22nd. Modern engineers meticulously calculated the temple's relocation to replicate this incredible phenomenon, which illuminates the sacred statues for 20 minutes each year on those dates.

The monumental relocation took four years to complete (1964-1968), and Abu Simbel remains one of Egypt’s most significant archaeological sites, following the pyramids of Giza.

  • Return to Aswan:
After your enriching visit, you will be transferred back to your hotel or Nile cruise in Aswan, concluding your private Abu Simbel tour.
