Embark on an enriching Day Trip to St. Simeon Monastery, situated at the southern tip of Elephantine Island. This historic site, originally known as Anba Hatre Monastery, dates back to the 6th century and holds significant cultural and religious importance.
Begin your adventure with a scenic camel ride to reach the ancient St. Simeon Monastery, an abandoned fortress primarily constructed in the 7th century, located near Aswan.
The monastery bears the name St. Simeon, attributed by archaeologists and travelers. In contrast, earlier Arabic and Coptic texts refer to it as Anba Hatre (also known as Hidra, Hadri, Hadra), named after an early anchorite consecrated as bishop of Syene (now Aswan) by Patriarch Theophilus (385-412 AD). According to tradition, Anba Hatre married at eighteen but, inspired by a funeral procession just after the wedding, chose to preserve his chastity and became a disciple of Saint Baiman. He dedicated eight years to ascetic practices under his mentor before retreating to the desert to study the life of Saint Antony. He passed away during the reign of Theodosius I.
